What is internal medicine?
Internal Medicine physicians specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of illnesses in adult patients.
Family medicine physicians and internal medicine physicians are primary care providers, which means that they are usually the doctor you see first and most often when needed - who maintain your history as their patient and help guide you in your health decisions.
In the case that a condition arises that requires care from another specialist, your primary care provider is available to help coordinate your care. They will work with you to help you achieve the best possible outcome for your health. At Optum, we have many specialists within our network, so we can better address the cost of your care as well. Our model of coordinated care is what we refer to as our "Patient Care Compass", or "Patient Centered Medical Home".
