Dr. Hjelkrem comes to Optum as an (almost) Retired Colonel, having served in the US Army from 2002 to 2023. He is a highly decorated physician and has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, received a multitude of military accolades, and has received commendations from several Surgeon Generals and Congressman for his exceptional care. Some of his military accolades include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2x), The Army Commendation Medal (3x), Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Superior Unit Award, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Armed Forces Service Medal.
Dr. Hjelkrem is described as kind, caring, and passionate. He strives for exceptional, modern, and up-to-date patient care with clear communication and successful treatment plans. Gastroenterology issues are often uncomfortable, disconcerting and awkward so he strives to treat patients with the utmost respect and dignity.
When not treating patients, he can be found hiking, biking, skiing, and traveling with his wife and three kids. He also enjoys playing the piano and reading.
